Gunnery Sergeant Howard Mial, Sr., 84, of New Bern, enterd into eternal
rest on Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at the CarolinaEast Medical Center, New
Howard was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church and the Ten-
Twenty Associates, a military-retirement organization. Retiring after 23
years of dedicated service in the United States Marine Corp, he was one of
the first black enlisted Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune. He earned a
variety of honors at home and abroad. Howard was one of the Montford Point
Marines interviewed in a study made possible through the Office of Naval
He was preceded in death by: his WIFE, Doris Delores Leavy and PARENTS,
Reverend and Mrs. Eddie Wyatt Mial.
Howard will be forever cherished by: 2 SONS, Howard Mial, Jr. (Deborah) of
Bakersfield, California and Darrell Mial of Washington, DC; 2 BROTHERS,
Rev. S. Walter Mial of Philadelphia and Roosevelt Perry (Dorothy) of
Ewing, New Jersey; 1 SISTER, Ruth Watkins (James) of Rockingham; and a
host of NEPHEWS, NIECES, COUSINS, other relatives and dear friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: First
Missionary Baptist Church, 819 Cypress Street, New Bern, North Carolina
Viewing will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 from 1PM-5PM at
Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., 701 West Street, New Bern and on
Wednesday from 9AM-9:45AM at the funeral home.
Homegoing Service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2009 at 10:00 AM in
the Memorial Chapel of Rivers-Morgan Funeral Home, Inc., with the Rev. Dr.
Jimmie L. Cooper, Officiating. Interment with military honors will follow
the service in the Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Jacksonville.
